Mercury Spacecraft

Titan: The Earthlike Moon by Athena Coustenis, This is the first book to deal with Titan, one of the most mysterious bodies in the solar system. The largest satellite of the giant planet Saturn, Titan is itself larger than the planet Mercury, mercury spacecraft and is unique in being the only known moon with a thick atmosphere. In addition, its atmosphere bears a startling resemblance to the Earth's, but is much colder. The American mercury spacecraft and European space agencies, NASA mercury spacecraft and ESA, have recently combined efforts to send a huge robot spacecraft to orbit Saturn mercury spacecraft and land on Titan. This book provides the background to this, the greatest deep space venture of our time, mercury spacecraft and sets the scene for what may be found when the spacecraft arrives in 2004.

A Tribble's Guide to Space: How to Get to Space and What to Do When You're There by Alan C. Tribble, Alan Tribble's "Guide to Space" is a superb introduction to the complex world of trajectories, spacecraft systems, mercury spacecraft and the space environment. It would have provided an invaluable background for the rookie flight controllers at Mercury Control as we prepared for our first launch.

Merkur (spacecraft) - Merkur, from a Russian word for the planet Mercury, was the name of a Soviet manned spacecraft whose design had features absent from other Soviet designs but found on the three early American projects. Its name was cognate with that of the US Project Mercury, although the shape of the capsule was very much like that of the Command Module of Project Apollo. Geology of Mercury - Of all the terrestrial planets in the Solar System, the geology of Mercury is the least understood. Reasons for this include Mercury's proximity to the Sun and the resultant dangers to spacecraft of intense solar radiation and high surface temperatures. Mercury-Redstone 2 - Mercury-Redstone 2 (MR-2) was launched at 16:55 UTC on January 31, 1961 from LC-5 at Cape Canaveral, Florida. Mercury spacecraft # 5 carried Ham the Chimp as a passenger on a suborbital space flight launched on Redstone MRLV-2. Mercury-Atlas 1 - Mercury-Atlas 1 (MA-1) was launched at 13:13 UTC on July 29, 1960 from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The Mercury spacecraft was unmanned and carried no launch escape system.

The launch date was first announced as January 16, 1962, then postponed to January 23 because of problems with the Atlas rocket fuel tanks. Mercury 6 launch vehicle, Atlas #109-D, arrived at Cape Canaveral on August 27, 1961. The heavy cloud cover would have prevented the necessary photo coverage of the launch. The flight used Atlas # 109-D were stacked on the pad at Launch Complex 14 on January 30, they discovered a fuel leak had soaked an internal insulation blanket between the fuel and oxidizer tanks of the planet Mercury.
